The Camping and Caravanning Club sites

Started in 1901 as the Association of Cycle Campers, this is the oldest camping organisation in the UK. It runs close to 100 of its own Club Sites and more than 1,200 member-only Certificated Sites, and operates as a not-for-profit body. It offers Club Care insurance, travel insurance, breakdown cover and manoeuvring courses, and contains special interest sections such as the Association of Lightweight Campers and the Canoe-Camping Club.

Founded in 1907 and based in East Grinstead, the club operates around 200 of its own campsites in the UK plus more than 2,200 small five-van Certificated Locations open only to members. It sells caravan, motorhome and travel insurance, MAYDAY breakdown cover and Red Pennant overseas travel cover. The club also books European ferries and pitches and runs manoeuvring and motorhome driving courses. It was known as The Caravan Club until February 2017.

Common questions

What is a club site?

A club site is a campsite owned and run by a membership club rather than a private operator. In the UK that mostly means the Caravan and Motorhome Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club, which run around 300 full-facility sites between them plus several thousand small Certificated Locations and Certificated Sites.

Do I have to be a member to stay?

It varies by site. Many full-facility club sites accept non-members at a higher nightly rate. The small five-van Certificated Locations and Certificated Sites are open to members only, because their planning exemption depends on it.

Which club should I join?

The Caravan and Motorhome Club has the larger network of its own sites and the bigger Certificated Location list. The Camping and Caravanning Club accepts tents at more of its sites and runs the Certificated Sites network. Several people hold both memberships, since each one pays for itself in a handful of nights.

Are club sites open all year?

Around a third stay open year-round. The rest run a season that typically starts in March and closes in October or November. Each site page here records the season the club publishes.
